The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation was founded with one diagnosis, long before its official start date, when Bonnie’s life was redefined. Bonnie’s prognosis was grim when she was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in 2003. Following a 14-hour surgery and a brutal and lengthy recovery, Bonnie became a Lung Cancer survivor. She realized that she was in a unique position to be the voice that could be heard throughout the world for the other 1.6 million people personally affected by the #1 cancer killer–Lung Cancer. The morning the news broke that Dana Reeve lost her battle with Lung Cancer, Bonnie decided: “Enough was enough!” BJALCF was born as a 501(c)3 on March 6, 2006.
Today, BJALCF has grown into the first international collaborative entity of its kind, raising over $9 million. Two years after it began, the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI) was created to connect the top thought leaders, scientists, researchers, and physicians worldwide to lead and empower patients toward better treatment options. Only immediate results-oriented projects or programs promising to catalyze progress through early detection, genetic testing, drug discovery and patient-focused outcomes are considered. The ultimate goal of BJALCF is to turn Lung Cancer into a survivable disease because ANYONE CAN GET LUNG CANCER.

Half of all smokers will develop SOME FORM OF CANCER, 10-20% will develop lung cancer specifically. However the current learning warning label on cigarettes is misleading because it implies that your risks from smoking only include lung cancer and heart disease. This is inaccurate. The label does not address the real risk of developing at least 16 other known forms of cancer. It also adds to the stigma that lung cancer is a smoker’s disease and creates a false sense of security that you are not at risk of developing lung cancer if you don’t smoke. This stigma is responsible for the fact that lung cancer is the number one cancer killer yet remains the least funded. People are dying from lung cancer every day just because they BREATHE AIR and smokers are developing many other forms of cancer, NOT JUST LUNG CANCER, as a result of the extremely addictive nature of smoking. Smoking also causes pancreatic, leukemia, liver, stomach, cervical, urinary tract, oral cavity, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypo pharynx, oesophagus, larynx and possibility colorectal, prostate cancers. Based on these facts we want that the warning label on cigarettes rewritten to reflect more accurate information that SMOKING CAUSES CANCER and heart disease.
Surgeon General please stop the stigma and change the label, address the fact the SMOKING CAUSES CANCER!
It only takes a few moments to make a difference. Please go to the Web address below and sign the petition.
Do it for yourself, your children, and your children’s children!

Written Content:
Veronica Nkiruka Okafor, 27, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer about two years ago, and she’s been told that her cancer is fast spreading. Veronica has been told that all options have been exhausted at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. This under-privileged African lady is in a dire need of medical treatment, and Courage to Dare is looking to bring her dreams to reality. Please everyone if you believe in second Chances, donate to this cause, so Veronica can once more believe in humanity, and her hopes can be restored. Tomorrow might be too late

“Approved 501 (c) (3) Organization”
After publishing 5 books in 2010 (about surviving cancer, caregiving, brain illness, and grief), I took a much needed hiatus. As I moved into other directions, I knew that if the right project came along, I would return to my writing crusade. That project begins now, and–thanks to www.W4WN.com (the Women 4 Women network), you have a front row seat for it all!
While it’s not a great comfort to the families of those who have lost their battle to breast cancer in the U.S., the survival rate here has really been on the rise. With so many organizations funding research and advanced treatments, the fifteen year survival rate (published by ACS for 2011) is at 77%.
HOWEVER, WE ARE ONE WORLD
Other countries are not so fortunate. The women in Africa need help. The first time that I spoke with Juliet Aguwa, I knew my sabbatical from writing was over. I was so shocked when I heard what she told me that I found myself saying: “Why don’t we write a book of stories about these women?”
Juliet (a breast cancer survivor from Nigeria) founded a charity called Courage to Dare. Their mission is to help African women with breast cancer. The challenges are from three main fronts: 1) The African culture considers cancer a curse from God; 2) No screening; and 3) Lack of affordable treatment (even if they start treatment, they often die because they cannot continue it).
On Monday, January 23rd, Cancer S.O.S. will be broadcast live at 2:00 p.m. EST and again at 5:00 p.m. EST from Wisconsin (Juliet’s home base) on www.W4WN.com. Along with me, you will be able to hear the emotion of the first interviews of women who have survived against unbelievable odds.
But this is just the beginning. In February, look for announcements about a radio-thon to support Courage to Dare on the Women 4 Women international network. This important fundraiser will allow us to go to Nigeria and complete the rest of the interviews–to tell the story to the world. The journey will also be filmed into a documentary.
Please spread the word to all of your connections. Every contact, every contribution, every offer to help is critical. Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
To learn more about Courage to Dare and how you can help, go to www.CouragetoDare.com. And, stay tuned for more announcements in the days ahead.
Thank you so much for your continuous support of my work. You make what I do and what I am possible.

I have also attached the results and proposal for Catholic Community Connection for their first “pilot sponsorship” of a Care-n-Share community which is a “public” community and the individual it is for is a friend of mine . The results for the sponsor and the family were impressive over just a 30 day period. This community is very active with 40+ members and growing. http://www.ccc.care-n-share.com/greetings/index/commu/OperationHelpDeb/city/cleveland {As an aside, this individual is my son’s wrestling coach’s wife from high school. She is a breast cancer survivor only to find out that after her surgery and treatments, she had hepatitis C. After two failed treatments for Hep C, she is on a new drug for 40 weeks which knocks her out. If the new chemo can knock out the Hep C, they can pursue other treatment options – liver transplant} Keep her in you prayers.
